I jump awake covered in sweat. I look around and feel startled by my surroundings until I realize where I am. Glancing around Rora’s basement, I see that she is no longer here with me, she must have gone back upstairs to her room. Relief fills my chest when I notice the clothes she has left for me by the stairs. I pull off the hoodie that is in shreds due to my shifting disaster yesterday and put on the clothes. Throwing the bag I had brought with me yesterday over my shoulders, I walk towards the basement window, propping it open so that I can crawl out and make my way back to my tent.
The dream flashes through my mind as I walk down the darkened streets of town, abandoned in the night. I wish that I had a watch so that I could know what time it is. I know it isn’t safe to be wandering the streets alone at night, there are men out with less than pure thoughts as well as cops that are just looking to take in a runaway. Street scum. That’s what they call us and they look for any excuse to arrest us and throw us back into another horrible foster home.
I sneak through the street, trying to remain as silent as possible as I make my way through yards and down alleyways, avoiding all main roads. As I make a turn towards an area I am very familiar with, I freeze. Five dark figures stand before me, unmoving. My gasp echoes in the night as I take in the figures. I am frozen in place, too terrified to move until one of them makes a noise that causes my heart to drop down to my feet.
“Mara, my child.” The one in the center says in a dark sinister voice.
“Who are you?” I ask, already knowing the answer. The Elders. They’ve come back, they are real.
“We have come for you, my child. We felt the change, now that you have shifted you are an official member of the Infernal Blade.” The Elder replies, the voice causing me to clench my fists in fear. My eyes immediately dart down to my hand, where the tattooed blade still shows brightly on my finger.
“You are the reason I changed? You made me that monster?” I ask, anger flaring inside me.
“That monster you speak of, holds more power than you can imagine. This is a gift, we have unleashed powers that laid dormant within you. You always had the potential to become a succubus, we just gave it a little… shove.” Although I am unable to see the Elder’s face I can hear the smile in their voice.
“Why? Why would such a power lie within me?” I reply, only thinking of my wretched mother who abandoned me to this life.
“Your father, he is an incubi. An incubi that laid with a human.” The Elder in the middle spits out, as if disgusted by the notion of lying with a human.
